Access to food that is healthy and affordable can often be difficult for those living in rural areas. Humboldt County is no exception. In all reality the unique location and demographics of this area can make it an even more challenging than the average rural location for creating a food system that is all at once equitable, economical and environmentally sustainable. Our geographically large, yet sparsely populated county creates extra time and travel costs that exponentially increase the price of food. Next month, the Humboldt Food Policy Council (HFPC) is hosting a regional food summit. The first of its kind, Food Summit 2016,–which will be held on February 27, 2016 at Humboldt State’s Kate Buchanan Room–seeks to revolutionize how we think about food in our area. This grassroots event features keynote speaker Anna Lappé, nationally acclaimed author of Diet for a Hot Planet, renowned educator and sustainable food advocate. Following her talk, a panel discussion and breakout sessions with food industry experts from Humboldt and surrounding counties will commence –all aimed at discussing what a healthy food system is and how we can collectively take action to make the food system in our region equitable, economical and environmentally friendly.
